On November 11th the church remembers St. Martin of Tours. The pagan Roman soldier who became a Christian and later a Bishop and who some of the babies keep calling “St. Luther.” Oh well.
I woke up on Friday and knew it was Veterans day then realized it was also St. Martin’s. I couldn’t believe I’d forgotten one of my favorite church days! I got to work digging out the memories of St. Martin’s days past and printing coloring pages for the babies at home that morning.
A cloudy cool day here made the warmth of our St. Martin “lanterns” quite soothing.
Warm Taco Soup for lunch.
This is the only day that swords are allowed at the table during the meal.
One of my favorite parts of St. Martin’s Day, the Horseshoe Cookies! Mercy and Esther helped me get these made last minute. And disaster struck. Half way through the recipe I found I was out of BUTTER! Crushed I googled substitutes for butter and used olive oil instead. I was worried the cookies would be ruined but they turned out tasty as ever! I think it’s the vanilla and the pecans I use instead of almonds. Yum.
After supper it was time for our Lantern walk. Traditonally we would walk to our neighbors house for a song and a treat. Last year in our rental house we didn’t have a walk. This year I decided the kids would just sing and walk around the church with Daddy.
I made up “Beggar Bags” for them to find when they got home from the walk. Ours had walnuts and a mandarin orange.
Then they all warmed up with apple cider and this year tried the horseshoe cookies and didn’t say they were disgusting. I might have to start sharing.
They just have lots of fun together. Thanks for posting.

Love those horseshoe cookies! Looks like everybody had a great time!
Great away to bring attention to the church year, I wish I was better at this.
Nice mug.
Some days are easier than others for me Carrie. I’ve missed a LOT of them this year. Life gets crazy. I just do those I can and don’t worry too much about it those I can’t. It’s nice but not essential!
Kristi, there’s a good story to go along with that mug! 😀
