the-newborn-child

My sweet friend Carrie recently emailed me with this question:

Suppose I know a couple who is expecting their 8th baby, a precious baby girl. Suppose this couple already has 5 baby girls. I know from experience of 3 boys that some baby items could be replaced after being used so many times already. I also know there are always new fun baby items that someone may want. Do you have any suggestions on what we can get this couple?

Boy she stirred a pot! I started a response to her with a few ideas, then added a few more. My list became longer than I thought it would be. Then it occurred to me.

Really, after 5 babies a Mama should just get another Baby Shower. By this point, it’s a good time for a “Out with the OLD, in with the NEW!” Or at least a good time to donate your gently used for some brand new.

Because I had fun with this I turned to a Facebook group I’m in with many other mamas who have lots of children. I posed a similar question to them and enjoyed reading their responses.

So, if one were wanting to get something for an 8th baby (or a 4th, 6th or 11th baby) here are some suggestions for you!

*This post is mostly for the Grandparents and any of you who just want to send my babies something. 🙂

“I think all toys should be invisible. Not only would they improve children’s imaginations, but they’d also be really affordable. In fact, every toy would be free.”  Jarod Kintz

While this is starting to become my philosophy, I still really like toys. And I like my babies to have them. BUT the type of toys and the amount of toys has to be managed from time to time.

Commitment to Loveliness

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Thanks to Mat. Emily for the inspiration to do some lovely things this week! Here are my goals:

1. Invest in some real facial cleanser and moisturizer. You’d all be appalled to know what my current skin care regiment consists of!
2. Finish Thank You notes
3. Send a Get Well note to a congregation member.
4. Paint my toenails (it’s the little things!)
5. Bake pumpkin muffins

I’m half way through my thank you notes, yay!

What about you ladies? Any goals to increase femininity and loveliness in your week?

So So Great

One of the blogs I read is having a contest to see who has the best response to the comment bellow. One of the readers (a mother of 4) entered this list. I had to share them or remember them for myself really. She writes: “The first is my favorite, although I’ve never had the guts to actually say it.”

“Wow, you sure have your hands full!”

1. “Yes, I do. But making children is so much fun!”

2. “Better than empty!”

3. “Not at all, you see, a handful is 5. Times that by 2 hands and that’s 10. I only have 4. Then of course, my husband is a big help and he has two hands as well…”

4. “I have lots of help from my 3 children. Many hands make light work!”

5. “My children are not a burden, in fact the Bible calls them blessings.”

6. “Praise be to God that He has filled them!”

7. “We only have 4! How many more do you think I could have before menopause?”

8. “Oh, this is just our ‘starter kit'”

9. “Well, when you have kids a beautiful as mine, how can you resists?”

10. “Did you know there is a woman in Arkansas with 19 children?”

And here’s the clincher that I would never use, but sometimes I really really want to.

11. “I’m working hard to make up for all of the kids that abortion has killed.”

My favorite is #2 or “I’m thankful that God has filled them!” would be a nice response. I have actually used #9!

Honestly I’m not too bothered by this comment, it’s a true statement in many ways . But there are several others that Phil and I get that I am bothered by and would like a better response to, for example the “You know how this keeps happening don’t you?” variety of comments. Grrr.

And while I’m on the subject of unnecessary comments the one that infuriates Phil and confuses me is the one we get over and over during each of my pregnancies, when inquiring about the sex of the child we hear “Oh it doesn’t matter right as long as they’re healthy!”. I just don’t think people think about what they’re saying when they say this. Would we not want our child if he or she wasn’t healthy? Healthy or not healthy, God would still have blessed us with a child. So PLEASE don’t ever say this to anyone!
