Thursday night Phil and I went on a fun date. He booked us a tour of four historic steakhouses here in Omaha through a company owned by one of our church members called Omaha Culinary Tours. We tasted a sample from the menu at each place and heard some of the history of the restaurant from each of the owners. All of these steakhouses have been around since the 1920s and 40s.
Our first stop was Cascio’s, the steakhouse in “Little Italy,” where we sampled the Tenderloin Brochettes au jus, breadsticks and pasta.
We also were given a tour of the kitchens in a couple places.
Most of the employees in these restaurants have worked there for 20 plus years.

Then we had a braised short rib and mashed potatoes at Johnny’s Cafe.
Unfortunately Piccolo’s is the first of these old steakhouses to have to close it’s doors. But the 3rd generation family member and owner opened up for us. He has since started serving classic menu items out of a food truck around town. He served a steak sandwich that I wanted a lot more of! And also had some cool spooky ghost stories to share about the building.
Last was Gorat’s, one of Warren Buffet’s faves. Phil’s a Buffet buff so we have always been curious about this place.
Couldn’t help himself.
We had a great time, some good food and what I liked best, learned some of the interesting history of Omaha. We might have to check out some of the other tours this company offers around the city!
What a great date! Looks like a good time.
You’re making me hungry…..
