A Bundle of Myrrh

"My beloved is unto me as a bundle of myrrh." Song of Solomon 1:13

St. Martin’s Day

November 13th, 2012 by Aubri

Sunday was St. Martin’s Day. We had a lot of fun with the traditions that surround the commemoration of this 4th century Bishop!

St. Martin’s Day Horseshoe cookies.

Making little lanterns for the table.

“Beggar Bags” for the babies, filled with candy, cookies and their new St. Martin dolls my mom made. I gave these to my neighbor to hand out when we knocked on her door.

Our Martinsbrot. Don’t laugh, it tasted better than it looked. I wanted to make something everyone might actually eat so I opted for a cinnamon sugar Martinsbrot instead of just sweet bread.

After supper we all bundled up to go for a Lantern Walk.

Essie sausage. Poor baby really needs a winter coat.

Our neighbors were waiting for us with special treats!

We did attempt to sing a couple St. Martin’s Day songs for our hosts..it went as well as I thought it would.

That’s not my red t-shirt tied around Gerhardt, it’s St. Martin’s warm wool cloak, someone had to be St. Martin for our walk! Sadly we forgot little Martin’s sword at home.

Fun fact from Treasury of Daily Prayer: “On St. Martin’s Day in 1483, the one-day-old son of Hans and Margarette Luther was baptized and given the name “Martin” Luther.
