Advent Things – The Cleaning

Emily shared this verse on her blog recently and I found it summed up exactly what I’ve felt pulled to for so many months.

Love your neighbor and aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands… I Thessalonians 4:11-12

I decided to try to make that my goal for the season of Advent. It’s easy to get pulled into too much “otherness” of life. Mostly for me it can be the whole social media thing. It has a way of causing me to live disquietly and certainly to not mind my own affairs but other’s affairs at the neglect of what I should rather be doing.

In a culture where so much can cause the anxieties of my heart to increase, it serves me well to remember this verse and strive to live according to it, not just during Advent but going forward into the next year as well.

Our St. Nicholas Day

On December 6th the church remembers St. Nicholas Bishop of Myra. There is so much legend in the story of who St. Nicholas was. But the only thing we know for sure is that he was a Bishop of the city of Myra. And I’m ok with that. I’m sure there must be many reasons for his fame and for the stories that have risen about him through time. He must have been generous and a good pastor.

But there’s not evidence that he paid dowries for young girls. There’s not actually much evidence that he was at the Council of Nicea and slapped Arius for heresy and I don’t need those to be real about his story to commemorate him.

The fact is that the Church honors the men God has put into the office of pastor, men who are willing to faithfully teach and confess God’s truth even in the face of persecution in a World hostile to Him. That’s enough for me

So we have fun on this day with the traditions and tales that surround the rememberance of St. Nicholas of Myra. I teach my babies to honor him as a man of God and fellow Christian.

And I might go a little overboard with the goodies.

At The Parsonage – Preparing for Advent

Whoever planned this “extra week” before Advent begins, Thank You! It’s been nice to have time to get a few things done before Advent was all in my face. Especially with being so sick all last weekend and still recovering the last few days. I’m grateful to have found some energy to get moving on the preparations and also get a bit of decorating done.

I was excited when this print came in the mail. Ordered from Jane.com.  I’ve used this site for many of the prints I have around my home. I frame them myself and have found so many great frames at Walmart for el cheapo!
