Before I go to bed, I thought I’d quickly share our day with you all along with some ideas for teaching children about this day and saint.
A little about St. Patrick from LCMS.org:
Patrick, Missionary to Ireland
Patrick is one of the best-known of the missionary saints. Born to a Christian family in Britain around the year 389, he was captured as a teenager by raiders, taken to Ireland, and forced to serve as a herdsman. After six years he escaped and found his way to a monastery community in France. Ordained a bishop in 432, he made his way back to Ireland, where he spent the rest of his long life spreading the Gospel and organizing Christian communities. He strongly defended the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in a time when it was not popular to do so. His literary legacy includes his autobiography, Confessio, and several prayers and hymns still used in the church today. Patrick died around the year 466.
I should not have been surprised that the weekly newsletter Lily brings home from school explained that this weeks theme was St. Patrick’s Day and they have learned all about….leprechauns. I suppose they can’t rightly bring saints into the public school system can they, but really? Where is St. Patrick on St. Patrick’s day?
Well, I made sure the girls had a good dosage of the man we might want to remember on St. Patrick’s day. For some fun crafts for Patrick and the Trinity go HERE. (So you know, this is a Catholic website.)
And last year I made a post HERE if you want some more ideas…for next year I guess!
And here’s the traditional “Kiss Me I’m Irish” onesie photo of Esther this year. My mom gave this to Lily when she was a wee babe, all my babies have worn it for St. Patrick’s Day since. You can see them all in it in this Onesie Post!
For the second year we went to a neighboring town for the Leprechaun Round-Up Fun Run. Phil only had the big girls last year, look at him now! I walked last year with Gerhardt in sling and Esther in womb but chose not to participate this time, I’m wimpy like that.
Phil finished the 2.2 mile race in about 17 minutes, he was the second adult to cross the finish, the others being under 12. I was pretty proud of him and as always people couldn’t get enough of the baby train!
We stayed for lunch (steak sandwiches!) and a few other activities…like being adorable. (Esther is very confused about why she didn’t have her own steak sandwich.)
And Phil and the girls did some sliding down big bouncy slides.
And we took in a bit of the parade before it was time to head home and pay the price for missing nap time.
But I was so happy the rainbow cupcakes I made turned out! Aren’t they pretty?
They stopped this hot and tired baby from crying for about 3 minutes after I pulled him out of his late nap for supper, yes, a cupcake before supper is always a good idea.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all!
I always enjoy reading abou y’all’s escapades and seeing the cute pictures! And a cupcake before supper probably didn’t hurt Gerhardt too much! 🙂
