Living Seasonally

It’s been Spring for some time now, but has barely felt that way here. Cool, cold, windy….Nebraska. But around our tiny town things are turning. Less brown, more green.  Buds are on the trees and birds in the air. It usually takes me until Easter has come to truly be “ready” for Spring and Summer. As a Winter and Fall girl I have a hard time leaving behind the warmth of those Seasons and embracing a different kind of heat.

But it’s time and I believe I’m ready for the change. So we stop eating the wonderful chowders (add some cumin to that!), put away what winter clothing we can, get out summer dresses, short sleeves, flip flops and sandals (..uh, then put on our coats to go outside because this ain’t Texas). And something in me says this is okay, I can handle this new season, maybe it won’t be so bad (panic attacks over Summer break will kick in soon enough).

Oh wonderful October! Our warm Fall is finally cooling off and cooler weather always puts a little bounce in my step…well not my step these days, maybe just my spirit. I could gush about the beauty this season brings, but I’ve done that before here and you all know how glorious that is.

It’s difficult to be on the brink of new baby world (3 more weeks!) and wanting to turn up the energy in order to soak up all this delicious Falliness. Being large with child is forcing me to slow down and decide what activities we’ll actually get around to.  One thing is for sure we’ll be heading over to the beautiful Elm tree around the corner and I’ll watch as the babies run around in the leaves. Getting outside as much as I can is definitely in order.

Living Seasonally:

Summer is coming to a close and once again life changes with this new season. A change in the weather is on the horizon and with school starting a change in our days has begun. Now there are schedules and school papers, lunches to pack and clothes to lay out everyday.

This season of life feels bogged down with stuff and things to do. And that’s just the basics. We aren’t even in the season of “extracurriculars”. It’s the daily tasks that swamp and wear me out. Plus growing a baby really makes me tired.

I have a nagging desire to “simplify”, “rest”, “slowdown” but how does one do that without everything crusting over and caving in?

It’s a constant remembering to put one foot in front of the other, pick one spot to clean at a time, not demand perfection from myself, let it get done eventually, be ok with mess and piles, let myself sit down and read a book to them and go outside sometimes.

But it’s ok to be tired right? Hardwork is ok. Taking care of 5+ children everyday all day is tiring, keeping a house is hard work. And while I need to remember at times to slow down and rest, I also need to remember that working is good. The work I do is good.

Sorry, what a rant!

Living Seasonally

Spring has come, Spring has gone several times this month. For a few days we’re out in the sun, sweating through 105 degrees, then we’re digging the winter coats out from the basement….again.

And really I’m okay with it. Most people are itching to pull out their swimsuits and grills. I’m happy to enjoy these cool days while they last.
