Christ-in-Glory-with-the-Saints-1660-xx-Mattia-Preti

The church year we keep comes to an end today, the last Sunday of the Church Year and a new year begins next Sunday with Advent. Today we were reminded of the end of the world and pointed to Christ our Savior who has been given all things. Who keeps His promises and who will come again.

It of course made me think about the past year, specifically about the ways we have numbered our days by the observations on our church calendar.

So I took some time this week to look back through this blog at the section on the Church Year. I had already forgotten much of what we have done this year.

Psalm 39

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
even those who seem secure.

But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.
 Save me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the scorn of fools.”

Backing up again so I don’t forget!

November 11th was Veteran’s Day and on our church calendar we celebrate St. Martin’s Day. I look forward to this day every year. Mostly because it’s the one day I enjoy these delicious horseshoe cookies. I know, I’m so pious.

My mouth waters as they bake the day before, it’s so hard to wait until the 11th before I eat one. No one else will eat them, so once it’s St. Martin’s Day they’re all mine!

I was looking forward to All Saint’s Day all week. I love this day as I alread said. Even with all the crazy that Sundays bring to our house and to my mood I looked forward to hearing, or overhearing a bit, the readings of the day and a sermon of comfort and hope.

all-saints-graphic

I think with the passing years All Saints Day is becoming one of my favorite days on our church calendar. I love me some Halloween as we celebrate it in our culture, but I’m also starting to love what Halloween is the ‘Eeen of even more and because of that we began our All Saints celebrating earlier in the week emphasizing the special day that was coming. I’m even contemplating a different route next year of dressing as saints for Halloween. Another teaching opportunity and wonderful way to remember those of the Church Triumphant.
