A Bundle of Myrrh

To quote Robert Louis Stevenson,

“To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.”

I’m not so sure he ever rode in a van sandwiched between a 2 and 3 year old for 10 hours. Arriving anywhere after that suddenly becomes the best thing that’s ever happened to you. Made even better by the people you get to see once you do finally make that arrival.

On Sunday July 15th we loaded up and drove to Texas. Our first week the babies and I spent with my family in Austin where I grew up, while Phil and some friends of his went down to the coast to once again hunt for sharks. No, they didn’t have any luck catching them, but the “journey” is the reward or something like that right?

Phil and I watched in horror as the temperature reading on our GPS kept ticking up hotter and hotter the Souther we went. It’s hot there y’all. And I’m wondering if the only reason a sane person would go somewhere this hot is because people they love live down there.

And then there’s the car situation, where you can’t tell whether or not you’re on a highway or in a parking lot, did we take a wrong turn somewhere? Nope. So we just sit and wait our turn to get off this crazy thing.

But it’s all worth it to hug necks, sip coffee, play games and just be around the family you love.

This week I celebrated another year of life, another birthday came my way. All these babies and my sweet niece sang me into the kitchen when I finally rolled out of bed that morning.

And that evening I was surprised by another song. Esther and my brother had prepared a duet for me, this is one of the best memories of our trip. Esther had learned the signing for this last year in Kindergarten and James, well he’s just talented enough to learn anything he wants. I don’t know where they came up with the idea to do this but I loved it, what a special gift.

This year Gerhardt decided playing Rummikub was one of his favorite things to do, so there was a lot of Rummikub going on.

Two of my dearest girlfriends did come over and visit with me this week as well and this is the only evidence of that that I got, a baby leg, the chubby wubby baby leg of my friendle’s squishy little squish.

Both of my brothers and I have birthdays in the same week of July. A couple days after mine my brother Scoty Pants had his, there was singing and candles and I guess a lot of confusion about what was supposed to happen next…at least for one of us.
