St. Nicholas – December 6

Tuesday we observed a favorite day in our house, St. Nicholas Day. We begin our remembrance of this saint with the kids leaving their shoes by the door before they go to bed the night before. In the morning they find treats, gold chocolate coins, an orange and peppermint sticks.

I also like to leave a goody basket on the table. In past years I have used the day to give some gifts, a new St. Nicholas book or dvd, new pajamas or socks, but this year I just went with yummy treats.

I did go ahead and get a small statue of St. Nicholas to add to the table and leave out on our church table. And finally was able to use the St. Nicholas tree ornament icon I ordered from Greece a year ago. It didn’t arrive until this Summer so I was glad to get it.

I was excited to find this chocolate St. Nickolas at the Christmas in Germany festival last weekend. So fun!

Waiting for everyone to wake up so they can check their shoes!

I let them go one at a time to the bench for their shoes instead of a massive barbarian horde stampede.

Since I’d forgotten to get Josephine’s shoes out of the nursery before Martha went to bed I had to wait until the morning. I don’t think she noticed thankfully.

My mom explains what the word ‘savor’ means. I don’t know what they were supposed to be ‘savoring’ though.

The perfectly cute little St. Nicks from our friends. I got these out for the babies as an after school snack.

And this year I shared our abundance and sent a gift basket over to the church.

I’m not sure who wins the best bedhead award: Martha or Mercy.

You do a great job of teaching your little family by teaching about St. Nicholas and other saint days. I always admire you for that. Keep up the great work. (And, yes, I KNOW that it is work.)
