A Bundle of Myrrh

"My beloved is unto me as a bundle of myrrh." Song of Solomon 1:13

“To enjoy the Christian faith here on earth does not mean to have all things in abundance and lack nothing. Look at your king, the Lord Jesus. Of what does he boast? What comfort has he in life? How highly is he praised? He has nothing but suffering, scorn, and disdain, and he dies in shame.”

“All those who know the way of this king and his kingdom willingly bear the cross. For they not only know that Christ, the eternal king, fared in the same way and is thus himself willing and ready to suffer, but they also take comfort in the knowledge that life in the eternal kingdom is full of joy and splendor, even though suffering must be endured on earth. That makes Christians joyful even in the midst of sorrows and trials.” Martin Luther

We were all spiffed up for Palm Sunday and Christ’s Triumphant entry into Jerusalem. This is a busy day for Phil with catechumen questioning and confirmation added to the services but I always look forward to Palm Sunday.

Palm Sundaes after supper always seem appropriate.

I’m about 1.5 weeks away from the arrival of our new baby and just running on fumes. I’ve had in my mind for weeks now, “just get through Easter morning.” I’ll admit that for me lately Easter hasn’t been a day of eager excited expectation but weary worn out apprehension.

But I show my love to my family and teach my babies this lessons we remember this Holy Week through food because we have to eat and I’m gonna be cooking anyway. So feast your eyes.

Spying Eyes for Holy Wednesday, sometimes called Spy Wednesday.

“Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.” Matthew 26

“Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands,… tied a towel around himself….and began to wash the disciples’ feet.” John 13

“John writes these truly great words to indicate what thoughts were in the mind of the Lord Jesus before he rose and washed their feet. He did not think of his sufferings; neither was his mind heavy with the sorrow that followed soon afterwards. He thought about his glory, which he shared with his Father from eternity, to whom he was to return.

But just then, when he was meditating on eternal glory, he rose from supper, laid aside his garments, wrapped himself in a towel, and poured water into a vessel. His thoughts are, “I am God and Lord over all things; in less than a day the devil will have done his worst. Then he and all my enemies will lie at my feet and leave my Christians in peace.” But he the greatest of Lords, does what slaves and servants do. He washes his disciples’ feet.

We should never exalt ourselves because of our gifts, never abuse them as an occasion of pride, but we should serve our neighbor with them to the very limit of our power.” Martin Luther

Instead of Lentil soup which I’ve served the past few years for our Maundy Thursday supper (and of which I am the only one to partake) I decided we could cook and eat “Peter’s Rooster” or chicken if you’re being unimaginative. It went over much better.

“If we are burdened with sins, let us carry them to Christ. He has nailed them to the cross and will forgive us and subdue death and the devil. Thus we are made partakers even of the death of Christ.” Martin Luther.
