Living Seasonally:
This year Winter has come and gone and come and gone again. We’ve had fake Spring then life in the Tundra so many times I’ve lost track of what season it actually is. But maybe that’s better than the perpetual brutality of the long bitter Winters we’ve had in the past. We’ve been able to open windows in January and run around without coats in February and I suppose for all our sanity I’ll take it.
Tending the Earth:
We haven’t had to break out the snow blower in several years! It hardly runs anymore, but made it just long enough to clear the drive and turn Phil into a snowman.
Giving Thanks:
1. For Grandmothers who are brave enough to come to NE in January to help me for a week while Phil is out of town! Thank you Grandmothers!
2. That even though we have had so much sickness through December and January and I thought we were over it and then it came back, that this time there was no throwing up, no lingering fevers, just one day of low fevers and extra tired girls. Shew.
Nurturing Bodies:
I finally caught up on some of the baking I missed out on during December due to SICK, but any energy for fun “winter crafts” has gone out the windows we opened when it hit 4o degrees. The paper snowflakes above being the exception because sometimes Mama has to lose herself in some coffee filters and scissors. “Don’t bug me, I’m making snowflakes.”
Nurturing Hands:
Every once in a while I’m brave too and let the babies help me with cooking supper. I truly do want them to learn how to cook at a young age, mostly so they can bring me steak in bed, but also because it’s a good skill for life right? I don’t always have the patience since if you let one help they all come running with their own particular ways of “helping.” I may resort to a “Helper Schedule” so everyone knows whose turn it is to drive Mama nuts help in the kitchen.
We’ve officially lost the house next door to us and gained a massive whole in the ground and no shade trees for the Summer to come. It needed to be torn down but it seems a little like the end of an era. The era of “the house next door.” We had friendly neighbors living there years ago. I remember those days and that couple fondly. All gone now.
Creating Beauty:
Did your Mama use socks to roll your hair when you were a little girl? Well mine did. And now she’s doing it to my little girls. They loved it!
This one doesn’t need socks for her curls.
Nurturing Minds:
Oh our Lily. I can’t get over how well she reads at just 6 years old. I found her reading The Boxcar Children to the other babies last week. Such a thrill for me! I hope she always keeps her love of reading.
Nurturing Hearts:
January 26th was the commemoration of St. Titus. I make a point on this day to teach about Titus and remind Gerhardt of where his middle name comes from. The babies all like hearing the stories of how we chose their names.
On this day we also pray for pastors and thank Daddy for all he does in his role as a pastor. Here Clara has drawn Phil preaching to us in the pew and walking home from church. I’m so proud of how still everyone is being!
Establishing Rhythm:
I think I’m still in some kind of lost state in the mornings with just 2 babies at home. Ephraim is my big kid for a few hours. I’ve started to try to have some crafts and fun things for him to do by himself but he’d much rather chase down Mercy and use her as a pillow then paint. He does not like his hands getting painty. Reminds me of his big brother that way.
These morning are a kind of breather for me though. Mercy will nap, Ephraim will play with some cars and I can stare into space with a cup of coffee or wash diapers almost uninterrupted. Weird.
Capturing Time:
Life keeps flying by. It’s good that you’re documenting it, not only for yourself, but for your children, as well.
I LOVE this post. And you are so funny. Staring into space and washing diapers uninterrupted have soul healing effects I do believe.
Is the pink dress Esther is wearing one of yours? My Claire is a reader. It’s hard to satiate her book demand, so now we’re learning moderation. I’ll have to send you a list of chapter books she likes
Thank you ladies! I’m just glad I got my bloggy blog working again was having trouble posting for a bit.
Katy, that dress wasn’t mine but could have been! My mom sent that this Christmas. She used to make dresses like that for me a lot when I was wee. And I’d love to see Claire’s book list!!!
