I really can’t get over how beautiful this part of our country is.
On Day 2 we packed in a lot of sightseeing, Jewel Cave (see previous post), Mt. Rushmore which we were “Meh” about and not sure if we cared to squeeze it in and the Black Hills National Forest.
I got out of the car to get a picture of these big rocks and was surprised to see George sitting right up on top! That’s Mt. Rushmore around the corner. Rushmore….check.
We moved on to the Black Hills National Forest and wound our way up Iron Mountain for this amazing view.
Some Iron Mountain Road facts from Phil:
- 17 MILES
- 314 CURVES
- 14 SWITCHBACKS
- 3 PIGTAILS
- 3 TUNNELS
- A full body massage at the top cuz you’ll need it after that tense drive.
The King of the World.
From Iron Mountain we could see Mt. Rushmore. The word that came to mind when I saw it was “dinky”. Impressive, but dinky compared to the amazjesty around it.
Day 3 we headed to Lead and Deadwood. Rainy, cool, another beautiful day.
A drive through Spearfish Canyon.
A stop in the gold mining town of Lead and a tour of the Homestake Gold Mine museum.
This old miner thinks this is a hard job, I told him to try staying home with 5 babies then we’ll talk hard.
We sped through Deadwood on our way to food. Sorry not much to write about on that one, though I’m sure you outlaws and gamblers would love it.
