Our First Trip to the ER

It finally happened. I guess I’m just surprised it hasn’t happened earlier. Last Tuesday night poor Essie fell and hit her brow. We knew right away it would need stitches. We couldn’t figure out how it happened since all the babies had different stories of what went down, but thankfully we don’t suspect foul play. We just know she fell somewhere around our table. I think she must have hit one of the kitchen chair legs.

However it happened, she was left with a bad cut that required 5 stitches! She’s been a brave little girl and I believe a little bit proud of her wound after all the attention it got at church.

I sure would like this to have been our first and ONLY trip we’ll have to take to the ER. Maybe it’s time for those padded rooms I’ve been dreaming about.

Goodbye to Our Town

I had no idea what to expect when I decided to marry Phil and that this would mean having to live in a small rural town in Nebraska. I was enchanted by the charms of this lovely place from the beginning but was unsure how I would handle actually living here.

But, it was Phil I wanted and if I was to have him it meant having this town too.

It was a hard adjustment for me but the beauty and simplicity of life in this place grew deep into me.

We have loved so much about our little town. We have been happy here, raising our babies here and starting so many traditions here.

I will miss how much harvest and planting seasons affect our lives. I will miss the tractors and combines that drive past our house everyday. I will miss watching the crops grow and walking the many hills. I’ll miss the oldness of the trees and maybe even the smell of money wafting in from the feed lot on the edge of town.

But as Nanci Griffith says, the heart of any town is the people that you’ve known. We have made some dear friends in this place. It is them we will miss most.

So, here’s another tribute. This one is for our town.

Our First 8 Years

I think back on this past year not knowing as we went along that we were writing the last chapter of the book that has been our 8 years here. Here where our story began.

house-outside

An ordination, an engagement, a home, a family. It all started in this little town, in this house.

They tell you that a house is just four walls and how easy it is to get emotionally attached to a living space. That it’s the people and the memories made there that matter most and when you leave it you’ll still have those. And that is true.

But I still can’t help the fact that this house that was our first home will always be a special place for us. Phil and I have never made a big move like this together, other than the big move of getting married I guess. This is the only home we’ve ever had and life is about to change in so many ways.

As I do when I want to commemorate a special occasion or when I’ve taken way too many amazing pictures, I made a slideshow. I warn you now, I’m planning about 5 more…maybe, so you can all walk down this lane of 8 years of memories with me.

Here’s a tribute to our first 8 years.
