Celebrating Michaelmas

Monday, October 1st, 2012

This is our first year to celebrate the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, September 29th. There tends to be a lot of curiosity and misunderstanding about angels, so I think this is a great Feast day to keep with our kiddos. (Those things on the table are the “last minute angel necklaces” I made for them to wear to church on Sunday morning.)

I found a pretty good article (“St. Micheal and All Angels” by Albert B . Collver III), here is a quote, you can read the rest HERE:

“The celebration of St. Michael and All Angels reminds us of how the Lord delivered us from the lying accusations of Satan. It shows us that the battle against Satan and his evil angels is not won by power, might, strength or numbers but, as Martin Luther’s great Reformation hymn “A Mighty Fortress” confesses, “One little word can fell him.” That one little Word is Jesus and the forgiveness He gives us.”

Holy Cross Day

Friday, September 14th, 2012

September 14th is Holy Cross Day. It is one of the oldest annual commemorations of the Church. You can read about it HERE. The legend states that St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine discovered the true cross Christ died on while on pilgrimage in Jerusalem. I don’t if that’s true and it wouldn’t matter if it were, but I like take advantage of this day to focus on the instrument God used to save us all and point the babies once again to the work of our Savior on that cross.

Above is our special treat for the day, a Monkey Bread Cross. I followed this recipe. It ain’t pretty, but I’m hoping it will be tasty!

Gerhardt’s Rebirthday Party

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Today we celebrate Gerhardt’s baptism day. Since he’s not too big on sweets (I know, how is this my child?!) his treat….Goldfish Crackers, one of his favorites and since the Fish has long been a symbol of Christianity, I thought it worked very well for such an occasion!

Two years ago today we brought this tiny sugar to the waters of Holy Baptism!
