Celebrating Michaelmas

October 1st, 2012 by Aubri

This is our first year to celebrate the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, September 29th. There tends to be a lot of curiosity and misunderstanding about angels, so I think this is a great Feast day to keep with our kiddos. (Those things on the table are the “last minute angel necklaces” I made for them to wear to church on Sunday morning.)

I found a pretty good article (“St. Micheal and All Angels” by Albert B . Collver III), here is a quote, you can read the rest HERE:

“The celebration of St. Michael and All Angels reminds us of how the Lord delivered us from the lying accusations of Satan. It shows us that the battle against Satan and his evil angels is not won by power, might, strength or numbers but, as Martin Luther’s great Reformation hymn “A Mighty Fortress” confesses, “One little word can fell him.” That one little Word is Jesus and the forgiveness He gives us.”

I printed, colored and hung THESE “Kitchen Angels” to which I made a few changes, giving them swords, shield and a Bible to make them a bit more fierce!

Most of the day was coloring and mayhem but I’m glad we stopped to think about God’s created angels.

Our Michaelmas “daisies” which are traditionally displayed for the day. For more traditions read HERE. And a wonderful Hymn for today can be found HERE!

Another tradition for this feast day is a meal of Roasted Goose with Apples, sounds good but I didn’t have a goose (though there was one wandering around outside of church last Sunday that I did consider bringing home for Michaelmas dinner).  So I made do with Chicken with Apples over angel hair pasta! And an apple pie for dessert. No I didn’t make this, it’s right out of a box and worth every penny!

Again from the article “St. Micheal and All Angels” by Albert B . Collver III

“The Lord employs His holy angels to battle Satan and to silence his mouth with the Word of God and to protect us from harm and danger. When bad things happen to us, when we have a close call and when we hear of disasters averted, we can be certain that the Lord’s holy angels were involved. And when we die, we can be certain that our Lord’s angels will take us to be with our Lord forever; their job of protecting us is not finished until we are with our Lord in eternity. For the protection of the holy angels, we can and should thank our Lord as we pray daily, “Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen”

And I just had to share a pretzel recipe. I made these for an Oktoberfest we had last night at our home, they turned out great!

Benne Seed Soft Pretzel recipe can be found here. (I didn’t use sesame seeds.) They were quickly gobbled up and I have half a mind to get in the kitchen and make some more!
