There was a warning for severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon. I didn’t think much of it, as I left for shut-in and nursing home visits. But in Lyons it started raining suddenly. Then lightening struck close by, which startled me. I left for Fremont, not thinking too much of it. In Oakland the sirens were going off. Then I passed several vehicles off Highway 77 recording the sky to the North, where I was coming from. When I got to Fremont I learned that several tornadoes had touched down and were heading towards us.
I was driving to Wal-Mart, looking to take cover, when I heard a loud bang. I didn’t know what it was at first, until several more hit. It was large hail. They were reported as golf-ball size. I was scared that they would break the windshields. I couldn’t believe how loud they were. It let up and I ran into Wal-Mart, in a dazed state. It was eerily deserted. The few people that were there were at the entrances looking at the sky.
In the Northeast area of Nebraska there were 7 tornadoes that reportedly touched down. Most were in the Tekamah (where I go fishing) to Oakland to West Point to Wisner line. Here is one that was videoed near Wisner, which is about 18 miles from Bancroft.
Bancroft didn’t have any severe weather or flooding, though I do have some nice reminders of the hail I encountered in Fremont on my car.
well I’m glad you made it safely to WalMart, and home! How much damage did your car suffer?
Not too bad. It can be seen, but it’s not overly obvious. Another reason not to wash it, I guess.
