Our Own Learning Basket

October 9th, 2010 by Aubri

Inspired by one of my blog crushes and eager to begin schooling Lily I’m going to attempt a themed lesson plan throughout this year. Each week the girls and I will learn about something new through, books, pictures, crafts, games, songs or videos from our “Learning Basket”. Lily is so bright and I think would do very well in a school type setting but unfortunately at her age this is not an option. She needs more structure, challenges and outlets so I think this plan will help us both in providing that.

Next week I will begin with Leaves.

Discuss their different colors, shapes, where to find them

Books– Go to library on Tuesday

Activities-
take a walk collect fall items

Crafts
Handprint Leaf (finger paint and trace)
Glue leaves on tree
Color or paint leaf pictures
Large leaf cutout and fill in
collect leaves for wreath

Pictures
Find in magazines, online, create slideshow

Songs
Found here and here

Video-
Autumn & Vivaldi
The Leaves Are Falling

    Thanks! I love your ideas!

Are you planning on homeschooling? I can't tell from your post if this is your pre-pre-pre-school lesson planning or just your "I would like to make my children uber prepared for public school" post 🙂

Hey Heidi! I'm not planning on homeschooling. I have entertained the thought but I really don't think I'm cut out for it plus I think Lily would love actually going to school. Thankfully it looks like we have a pretty good community school here at least at the grade school level. So I'm comfortable with the idea of her learning there. I do however plan on supplementing any additional content I feel would be lacking in the public realm of education. I'm just needing a system that gives Lily some structure to her day and an outlet (or inlet) for her curious mind and thought this would keep me on track for providing those things. What about you? Are you homeschooling?By the way, my children will be uber prepared for public school due to their extraordinarily high intelligence, it's unfair really.

haha–I completely understand the dilemma your children face; ours face an equally daunting problem. It must be something along the lines of: the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts?!?! It is that reality that led us to embrace homeschooling 🙂 I began Grace Ann at an embarrassingly early age. But, it has allowed a big enough buffer for me to ease into without feeling terribly much pressure. Right now we are full swing with all subjects..including Latin. Yikes!! I was never much of a languages sort of gal, so this is posing more of a challenge to me than to her.I completely agree about the structure in your day! The girls, even though they protest doing schools on some days, have much better behavior throughout when we have a full day. Have fun with your learning basket!p.s. I heard through the grapevine that you were in Austin a few months ago and failed to contact me. Don't worry–I found myself in Bancroft last week and couldn't quite manage to find you. haha! Congrats on your little boy! Can this post serve as my general congratulations on having a new baby? It seems rather lame, but I'm too far committed to it to back down…

Latin huh? I'm surprised Phil hasn't sat Lily down for her first Hebrew lesson yet! It would have been fun to see you and meet your babies! I keep forgetting you're so close to Austin now. You might not have wanted to see me anyway though, I was a swollen, hot mess! How did I ever live in that state?!
