I’m ashamed to admit it, but I don’t really like Thanksgiving. I don’t get excited about it but still feel compelled to make it a special day by making all the typical fare. But at this stage in my life it just seems like a lot of work for a meal that my family won’t really be that thankful for. So I thought I’d do something different this year and start a tradition with this Thanksgiving Day countdown calendar. I got the idea from here. She uses it for Christmas, I adapted it for this season and decided to try putting something in each day instead of taking something out.
Everyday up to Thanksgiving Day each of us or one of us writes down something they are thankful for and puts it in the tube. Then on Thanksgiving day we’ll take them all out and read them. My mom helped me make this while she was here and I kept thinking “What am I doing? I mean “toilet paper rolls?!” Yes, those are toilet paper rolls but hey, it gives me something to look forward to. I’ll admit I haven’t put something in everyday, but it’s the first year I’m trying it and hopefully if I keep pulling this toilet paper garland out each year, the kiddos will begin to enjoy it and think on what they have to be thankful for.
hey- those look really cute! so much better than all those toilet paper rolls laying on the craft table….
What a GREAT idea! Do you know the song that Grandma Sissy always sang to us? “There’s a Great Big Turkey out on Grandpa’s farm…”? That would be a fun song to continue through the generations.
Thanks Aunty! I’m very sure I’ve heard that one and though I have picked up many many of Grandma’s tunes I don’t think I learned that one. I bet I know someone who could call me and play it on my answering machine though!
