Our Reformation Sunday

Yesterday we Lutherans observed the Reformation (“Reformation Day” – Oct. 31). We added a book to our library I thumbed through it and am looking forward to sittting down with the babies with this one. Look like good teaching tool! Oh and Lily was so excited about her First Catechism!

Mom, you’ll have noticed Katie is sans Martin…I’m hoping he’ll show up. In the meantime we thought “pastor” was good company for her. I fear if he rolled off into “Chinatown” (under my china cabinet) he’ll never be seen again, but we’re hoping he’s just off at some Diet.

Und we had Jägerschnitzel for lunch!

To this day schnitzel has a way of taking me right back to my childhood years in Germany. Mmmm.

Our gingerbread church apparently in desperate need of a new roof, or really just the other side of it. We’re raising funds.

Or maybe all the money for the roof went to the church decorating committee.

Pin the symbol on the church door!

I let the babies watch a bit of Luther after lunch. There were a lot of questions, mostly Gerhardt’s “Can we watch Mickey Mouse?”

Love remembering Luther and the Reformation with my babies and beginning to teach them more about both. Though it is HARD explaining a lot of it to preschoolers!

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

“The soul can live without all things except the Word of God, without the Word of God nothing can help us. But when we have the Word we need nothing else, for in the Word we have enough food, joy peace, light art, justice, truth, wisdom, and all good things in abundance.

What then is this Word that bestows such high grace and how shall I use it? It is nothing other than the actual preaching of Christ as it is contained in the gospel. The purpose of the preaching is that you should hear your God speaking to you, telling how all your life and works are nothing before God and how you and all that is in you would perish eternally. If you truly believe how sinful you are, you will despair of yourself entirely. But in order that you may be saved from yourself and out of yourself – that is, out of ruin – God presents to you his dearly beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and bids you through his living and comforting Word to yield yourself to him with a cheerful heart.

For the sake of such faith all your sins will be forgive, your ruin overcome, and you will be just and true, content and devout, fulfilling all his commandments, and set free from all things.” Martin Luther

  1. Love this! (And I, too, hope Martin is off on some Diet rather than in Chinatown!)

My son wore his “flame” shirt yesterday – a button down shirt my Mom made him covered with a flame print. Perfect for Pentecost and Reformation. He got lots of compliments. Alas, my daughter had to settle for bright pink rather than Reformation Red yesterday. I guess she grew out of everything she owned that was red except a rather grungy pair of red knit pants (no way was she wearing those!).

Hope you enjoy All Saint’s this next weekend too….
