Epiphany

We celebrated Epiphany on Monday.

Though “Epiphany” doesn’t truly commemorate just one event, it is commonly used to teach and remember the Magi that came to worship the newborn King of the Jews. From Treasury of Daily Prayer “The idea of Epiphany is that the Christ who was born in Bethlehem is recognized by the world as God.”

On this day we bring out all the Wisemen we have and put them in our creche and move those that have been travelling around the house during Christmas to their final destination, the baby Jesus.

I also make an Epiphany cake. This year I made an amazing and easy Rum Cake and included more trinkets to be found inside than I have in the past.  I fudged the “meanings” a little since it’s my party and I can do that:

A Ring  – for a special blessing this year
A Button – for an industrious year
A Coin – for wealth
The Baby – for the win!

Of course, the one who finds the baby Jesus is King or Queen for the night!

Clara found him in her second piece. She wasn’t at all excited.

This is the third year we have had 3 of our neighbors over for our Epiphany Feast. A tradition that I have come to enjoy.

On the menu, “Golden Foods”:

Scalloped Potato Gratin
Honey Glazed Carrots
Saffron Yellow Rice
Macaroni and Cheese (for Lily)
and Windsor Chops

I made a galette des rois for the first time. SO GOOD (and really easy, if you use frozen puff pastry).

We did the pea and bean thing. I got to be king and the hubby was queen for the day. HILARIOUS for those under 7.

We did vasilopita (husband’s yiayia’s recipe, which is cool) for St. Basil’s Day last week (and the new baby got the coin). Claire says being born and being baptized is the best thing to happen to anyone, so it’s appropriate s/he got the coin. The kids really destroyed their piece of cake to find it.

I’m in the middle of nesting. Soon, very soon!

  2. Oh – What a good idea!!!

We did a 12 Days of Christmas party this year. It was a blast but also a TON of work (though everyone pitched in which made it easier than it could have been). This would be so much easier. Maybe next year….

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing ladies, I like hearing about what other families are doing for these occasions. Lea, I’d like to hear more about your 12 days party!

Prayers for you Katy….It’s the Final Countdown!
