Our St. Lucia Day

December 13th we celebrated the Feast of St. Lucia or St. Lucy. This winter day is a good time to focus the attention on not just the story of the girl who was martyred for her faith, but the Light of the World.

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

And discuss that Christ, the Light, also calls us to be light.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

We sing I Want to Walk As A Child of the Light.

And we give thanks for the Light that comes to us in our Darkness.

“The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.”

The girls wear their Lucy Crowns and I’m waiting for them to get bigger so they can bring me breakfast and coffee in bed as is a tradition on this day!

There’s even something for the boys, our Star Boys or just “Gnomes” as Gerhardt kept saying.
