A Bundle of Myrrh

May Day and St. Philip

May 1st, 2013 by Aubri

Today we celebrate God’s good gift of Spring. Though to look outside you wouldn’t know Spring had arrived!

Clouds, rain and snow all day today, possibly up to 12 inches?!

Happy May Day to us!

A May basket for the babies with some things I’ve collected over the past few months. I like giving Spring and Summer goodies on May Day. It’s fun to have an occasion to present “ordinary” things.

Some ideas for May Day gifts other than flowers and candy (which are wonderful too!) are: pool toys, new swim suits, new summer shoes, sand toys, bug catching kits, kites, frisbees, other outdoor toys, Summer and Spring stickers and other craft supplies, Spring and Summer reading books, Spring cookie cutters, sun hats, ice cream and homemade popsicle supplies.

This year I also bought a lot of colorful kitchen supplies at the dollar store that they can play with outside once the weather warms up.

Lily enjoying her new Spring cookie cutters….and her Winter clothes. Crazy weather.

A gift for our neighbors to brighten their day.

And a gift from our other neighbors to brighten our day!

May 1st is also the day the Lutheran Church commemorates St. Philip, disciple of Christ. One of the symbols for Philip is a cross with two loaves of bread because of his response to Jesus’ question in John 6:

“Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” John 6

Philip also preached Christ to the Ethiopian Eunich and baptized him as told in Acts. So we ate “Chariots and the Ethiopian” for our snack today. I’m not sure what the pretzel is, I was going for a horse. Maybe we should have just eaten cookies…

Happy Spring to you all!

You wouldn’t believe the fat snowflakes I’m looking at out the window as I type that.

ahhh…springtime… It is my most favorite time of the year – I say as we in Texas are experiencing weather in the 50s and a strong north wind. Not like your snow, but a chilly spring day for us nonetheless! Happy Spring to all of you in the cold north prairie lands! 🙂
