This is a picture of my vacancy church, perhaps soon to be part of a dual parish with the church I am currently called to. Although it looks too good to be real, a member who lives near the church sent it to me. It’s not always this pretty though. I remember drifts a couple of winters ago over 8 ft tall on this gravel road.

Preparing for Church
Sunday, August 14th, 2011
“Built on the Rock the Church doth stand,
Even when steeples are falling;
Crumbled have spires in every land,
Bells still are chiming and calling,
Calling the young and old to rest,
But above all the soul distrest,
Longing for rest everlasting.”
Sunday mornings can be hectic. There’s breakfast to make, then lunch (because we are all ready to eat as soon as we get home!), then getting all three little cleaned and dressed which can be a fight. Oh and I have to get dressed, that can be a fight as well. I’m learning that as much as can be done on Saturday night to make Sunday smoother, the better!
With all that goes on, I’ve begun to incorporate a little time to sit the girls down and talk about going to church. We sing one of the hymns that Daddy has chosen for the day to familiarize them with it and in hopes that they enjoy recognizing it once they hear it there. And we discuss who Daddy will be teaching us about and what I expect of them as far as behavior goes. Then we say a little prayer.
In addition to one of the hymns for the day we sing another from a book Weslie and Kristina gave Lily for her birthday. It’s called, Hosanna, Loud Hosanna A Treasury of hymns for children by Kelly Klages. I love this book! It’s just what I’ve been looking for for a long time now, didn’t find and thought about ways to make on my own. I’m so glad I didn’t have to.
This book has 25 hymns. It’s divided into two parts. In the first part the hymn lyrics are written and are accompanied by illustrations for each hymn. The second part has the music, short explanations, questions to ask children to get them thinking about what the words teach and a memory verse that goes with the hymn. Plus you can find coloring pages to accompany the book HERE, another great activity for Sunday mornings.
If you have little ones what are some ways your family prepares for church?
First VBS Program
Saturday, June 18th, 2011
Lily’s first VBS evening program went better for her than I thought. She had to sit right next to the teacher’s aid and Clara was allowed to sit with her too so I think that helped her not get too scared to be in front of everyone but unfortunately, though she knew some of the songs, she didn’t sing a word.
She stood up one time with all the kiddos but soon made her pouty face and sat the rest of the time.
Then toward the end of the show she began to fall asleep. I’d been afraid this might happen since this thing started right at the girls’ bed time. Oh well!
See! She did know at least ONE song!
