The Feast Days of Saints Monica and Augustine of Hippo.
Since August 28th (the Feast day of St. Augustine) is also Gerhardt’s brithday, I decided to combine Augustine’s commemoration with his mother Monica’s and remember them both on the 27th.
We hardly did anything for this day. I’m just getting back into the swing of keeping the church year in our home. It’s been a long while.
We simply read a bit about Augustine from our Treasury of Daily Prayer. I’m not sure most the kids heard anything over Martha and Mercy’s crying but they did make out that Augustine was from Hippo (laugh laugh laugh) and Monica from Africa (Lily all about Africa since that’s where Epypt is). That’s good right? Then Phil and I had a couple beers after the babes were put to bed. Fitting I thought since St. Augustine is the patron saint of brewers.
If I’d given myself more time I might have made Tears of St. Monica shaped sugar cookies for snack time but the day got away from me and I thought I could come up with something better. Lesson: Perfect is the enemy of good. Or something like that.
May our restless hearts learn to rest in Christ.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matt. 11:28-29
