Yesterday was Phil’s 29th birthday! He was surprised with a wonderful breakfast of all his favorites; hash browns, boiled eggs, bacon and homemade biscuits. He’s such a lucky boy! Also, he finally got to open his cards and a present from my mom. Little did he know that the day would hold another surprise that evening, a secret meatball and spaghetti supper with some good friends! I’d busied myself all week plotting right under his nose and it really paid off.

A shirt from my mom!
Phil arrived home hoping to run off and play some basketball then have a quiet evening. I think he enjoyed what I had planned for him instead.Look how much fun he’s having!

I made baked spaghetti for the guests and myself, but Phil will have no part of spaghetti with meat in the sauce. He’s a strictly meatballs guy. He had his own birthday boy plate. These happen to be the best meatballs I’ve ever made. Believe it or not, I didn’t, he ate all of this.
There’s my baked spaghetti. It was a hit.
And a chocolate chip birthday cake. He did not eat all of this. I almost did though.

My surprise party went very well. I think I’ll do it again next year.

In April, Lily and I spent a whole week in Austin! It was great to be with family and friends again after so long. Highlights included; amazing food I missed so much, a baby shower, Mama’s 60th birthday celebration, food, going to Starbucks, family coming all the way from Alabama, food, late nights, early mornings and did I mention food?
Me with Mama, brother, sister-in-law and nieces, on top of Austin’s new “mountain” near Lady Bird Lake formerly known as plain old Town Lake.
Me and Lily in the Bluebonnets! A Texas tradition. Sadly these were all I could find this time of year.
Hanging out in Mama’s back yard with all my homies.
And my Sofflings!
Sara Jane and I had a very special date at Starbucks! Mmmm, Mochas and Pumpkin Bread. Thank you Boo Boo!
Monday was Mama’s birthday. It was a day full of surprises, special features, balloons and FOOD!

Happy Birthday Mama!

After a fast and busy week it was time to get home to good ole’ Nebraska where my sweet husband and countless naps awaited my return.

The weekend after Christmas Mama, James, Sandy, Sara (BooBoo) and Elle came to see us! I was so happy to have them here. They were able to stay for 4 days then had to make the 18 hour trek back to Texas. Sunday our friends Clint and Jodi Pearson, who lived in Texas years ago, came up from Kenard NE with their kids, Cody and Caitlin, for church service and dinner.

Snow fight!

James emerges from Phil’s igloo, or maybe he’s going in backwards.

Phil and Cody in the igloo, which really got roomy thanks to all the child labor.

After dinner we went over to the park for some extreme sledding! Here’s Sara.
Clint and Elle have a go. Elle acts terrified for Clint’s sake.

Sandy prepares herself to take the plunge.

She took it bravely.

Phil sports an older model sled for speed and more mobility and to look cooler than everyone else.

I looked like a rectangle, but I was warm!

We took a tour of downtown Bancroft. Here’s Main St.

Me and Sara on our way to Roger’s Market where I do most of my in town grocery shopping.

Shopping at Roger’s.

Here’s our bank.

Kay and Loretta Schwedhelm had us over to their place to sled on their hill and it was quite the hill, but you had to watch out for the cornstalks on the way down. Here Phil, James, Elle and Kay make the walk back up, the fun part.

On their last night here we all went over to Lyons, about 7 miles from Bancroft to eat supper at The Branding Iron. It was a treat to get out to a real restaurant!

Elle and Sara really took to their new uncle Phil.
Can you blame them?

With Mama.

Don’t be fooled, there’s nothing glamorous about salting a dead cold bird, I know I make it look fun. This was my first Thanksgiving away from my mama. However, I was a big girl and I think I pulled it off!
My beautiful turkey before Phil got a hold of it.
This was a first for Phil too. He looked so calm and collected….at first.
Phil’s mom and dad, Neil and Verna, came up for a few days. It was good to have family to share the day with.

And for dessert, an apple pie from scratch. I’m getting better at these.
