Haste Makes Waste

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

“Being in a hurry. Getting to the next thing without fully entering the thing in front of me. I cannot think of a single advantage I’ve ever gained from being in a hurry. But a thousand broken and missed things, tens of thousands, lie in the wake of all the rushing…Through all that haste I thought I was making up time. I turns out I was throwing it away.” Mark Buchanan as quoted in One Thousand Gifts

Isn’t is easy to get pulled into the frenzy of December? The constant of activity, shopping, parties, programs, the “enjoying” the season. Life gets that way too and isn’t it true that haste does make waste.

I’d love to be better at “fully entering the thing in front of me”. Enjoying moments of life while I have them.

Like right now, I’d love to finish this post with two hands instead of one. But the other is occupied, filled with a hungry babe who stares up at me with tiny new eyes, so I’ll stop and be filled with this moment.

Mother’s Day

Me and my beautiful Mama circa…a long time ago.

I recently talked with my mom on the phone and began thanking her for all the unpleasant things she did for me while raising me. We laughed about it, but really I thank you Mama! Thank you for all the necessary but unpleasant things that go unnoticed and “unthanked”. Thankless until I became the mama and began doing them for my little ones. I love you!

And two other beautiful mamas I think about today.

My mama’s mama, Muriel, “Sissy”, Grandma, mother of 11 babies, pictured here with one of my aunties.

And Dad’s mama, Edna, “Mimi”, mother of 5 boys, here with my Dad!

Happy Mother’s Day!

“He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.”

Just a Wind Storm

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

I have had a great many days in a row where I can’t tell what I did at the end of the day. I am pretty sure I did something. I didn’t sit down that I can remember. These are the kind of days when my husband tells me that I was being fruitful, even if it doesn’t look productive. A fruit tree doesn’t move things from an in-basket to an out-basket all day. It is not in the business of ticking off boxes on a to-do list. Sometimes the business of being fruitful is standing in the rain, holding on to your branches in a wind storm, or simply providing shade. Every day is not an apple harvest day. Every day is part of a process, part of a journey towards fruit. Your whole life is part of a fruit bearing work, but today was just a wind storm.

Three is a Magic Number

Last November (which is National Adoption Month) I asked my dear friend, Eugénie, to take some time to write the story of how she and her husband Jud were blessed with a baby girl through adoption. The Lord graciously gives His gift of children in different ways and by different means and in His time. I wept with joy when I saw how He had blessed Eugénie and made her the mother she always wanted to be. I’m so happy to finally be able to share her story here with you all.
