Happy Birthday Lily!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Lily is a year old today!

All good things must come to an end and it’s a good thing! Here is the finally installment in the “12 months of Lily” (of which there exist only 11 installments and were almost only 10).

I was lucky to get one more pose out of Lily, she is getting way too busy to be sitting for a silly portrait! I’ll let all of you see what I mean for yourselves.

Oh! This one would have been good but I had to be all shakey!

Oh well. I gave up.

Then she was out the door and smiling so pretty for her picture…going…

going….

gone.

I wrote this a year ago to our sweet newborn baby Lily. What a joy to have experienced all the changes she’s gone through this year. I look forward to seeing all the ways she’ll keep growing and changing in the next.

Lily Ruth, you’ve been with Mama and Daddy for one week. How quickly the days have gone. To think seven days ago you were still in my tummy. I loved to feel you moving around in there; kicking, squirming and even those hiccups that sometimes seemed would never go away. I do miss that special time when you grew inside me, watching my belly get bigger and bigger with you and seeing the smiles on the faces of others as we all waited for you. I miss how much your Daddy would talk to my tummy knowing you could hear him and the joy of those first kicks even he was able to feel. Now that you are here, I feel relief to finally be able to see you, hear you and touch you. What joy each of these bring us, every movement, every sigh, every little squeak and grunt you make. What a miracle Jesus has made for us, every detail of you is perfect. You are our little blessing and you’ll grow and grow until this small fragile bundle is just a memory. I will miss this tiny you but know you’ll bring us so much more joy as we watch you become the fat funny baby, the playful little girl, the teenager and someday the woman the Lord is making you.

Phil turned 30 years OLD yesterday! Lily and I made him special cards and his favorite taco lunch.

Gifts from my mom arrived right before we headed down to Omaha to spend the day in the “Old Market” and have supper at the Upstream Brewery where Phil and I shared our first meal together in Nebraska two years ago, ahhh.

Omaha is proud of the new pedestrian suspension bridge they just opened. We had to check out this 22 million dollar addition to the city. It was a nice walk after we’d stuffed ourselves. We stopped to look over the edge at the mighty Missouri river that flows under it and realized we weren’t just walking across, we were bouncing. I thought of Mom and Sylvia and how much you gals would have LOVED that!

Yesterday was my XXst birthday. Our neighbors, the Munderlohs, took us out to eat at the town pub and made me a chocolate cake! Mama sent a package of goodies, including these dark chocolate m&ms! Yum! For supper we had “birthday pizza” at an after rehearsal dinner for a wedding Phil is doing today. I was just happy to not have to cook!

The Munderlohs and their granddaughter Makala came over for the surprise lunch downtown!
This is the card my sweet husband made me.
I’m still creeped out when I look at our faces, but I love my dress! It’s a bit see through, but so glamorous with the “off one shoulder” design! Also note how tall Phil is, at least I think that’s Phil, his head seems a little small and he’s shaved his beard.Life was quite different now than this time last year! I’m really looking forward to the changes this year will bring.

Yesterday was Phil’s 29th birthday! He was surprised with a wonderful breakfast of all his favorites; hash browns, boiled eggs, bacon and homemade biscuits. He’s such a lucky boy! Also, he finally got to open his cards and a present from my mom. Little did he know that the day would hold another surprise that evening, a secret meatball and spaghetti supper with some good friends! I’d busied myself all week plotting right under his nose and it really paid off.

A shirt from my mom!
Phil arrived home hoping to run off and play some basketball then have a quiet evening. I think he enjoyed what I had planned for him instead.Look how much fun he’s having!

I made baked spaghetti for the guests and myself, but Phil will have no part of spaghetti with meat in the sauce. He’s a strictly meatballs guy. He had his own birthday boy plate. These happen to be the best meatballs I’ve ever made. Believe it or not, I didn’t, he ate all of this.
There’s my baked spaghetti. It was a hit.
And a chocolate chip birthday cake. He did not eat all of this. I almost did though.

My surprise party went very well. I think I’ll do it again next year.
