At The Parsonage – Lent

Another Lent is here. And I’ll say so far this seems to be the least weary and worn out Lent I’ve had in a while. I guess there are times in life when it feels like things are “clicking” better than other times. Maybe like a fog has lifted. For how long? I have no idea. But I’ll enjoy it while it’s here. I’ve finally found the energy to nail down a schedule for the daily things and added the extras I’ve been wanting to make more regular habits of. I think I’ll write on that later.

The third Sunday of Lent is almost here. This year during Lent I’ve made certain behaviors and disciplines in our home a priority.

I chose to focus on 2 Commandments with the babies, the 4th and 5th. They are all working to speak with reverence and kindness to their father and mother more often. On their attitudes as well and asking for forgiveness when they break these commandments. We will move on to kindness to one another next. I realize these are life long disciplines and continual failings but I’m still determined not only to demand these things from my children but to teach them what God says these commandments mean and how they are to do them.

We have two times of the day when we set aside time for God’s Word, Catechesis, prayers and hymns. We have started to use the Psalter during this time, chanting a couple verses from Psalm 51. And I decided to begin praying certain prayers from our hymnal on a regular basis so the babies will begin to learn them. I would love for them to have prayers in addition to the one our Lord gave us to pray memorized. We are also singing 1 hymn this Lent, Glory Be To Jesus. I’ll have them memorize this as well.

I set out our Prayer Jar and our Giving Jar, but haven’t gotten around to using these yet this year.

During our evening Bible time it was my intention to use our Jesus Tree and ornaments but we’re not doing so well with that. Evening Bible time is more of a challenge than morning Bible time….

Glory be to Jesus,
Who in bitter pains
Poured for me the life-blood
From His sacred veins!

Grace and life eternal
In that blood I find;
Blest be His compassion,
Infinitely kind!

    We’ve found the best time for our Bible time is at the breakfast table. The children are just so tired in the evening.
