A Bundle of Myrrh

"My beloved is unto me as a bundle of myrrh." Song of Solomon 1:13

Cinco De Mayo

May 5th, 2012 by Aubri

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about roots, heritage and culture and it seems the older I get the more of these things I acquire, if that’s possible. Born in the deep South of Alabama, raised a bit in Germany then much of my life in Texas and now living here in Nebraska where my children will have roots. All of these places have left (and are leaving) there mark on me in different ways and I find them coming out at times like today, Cinco de Mayo.

I guess my years in Texas make me want to celebrate today for the touches of Mexico I grew up with there. And since my babies will never know that, I bring it to them. Just like yesterday, my Southerny side was coming out as I sat on the porch sipping my sweet iced tea, reading my Southern Living magazine while Lily laughed and splashed in her plastic pool. You just can’t get away from your roots, and really, I wouldn’t want to!

Pictured above is a “Mexican Hot Dog”. Clara wanted hot dogs for lunch so I went with it. Most Mexican Hot Dogs are wrapped in bacon, grilled, then topped with all the “Mexican” deliciousness that you can find in your fridge. On mine; sauteed onions and green chile peppers, cheese, cilantro and of course salsa, then you tuck all that (if you can) into a warm tortilla.

Our Feista began with tortillas and la musica!

The girls love the Jarabe Tapatio (Mexican Hat Dance)! Make sure you have your tortillas ready for a bite if you get hungry during all that Mexican hat dancing.

We made the flag of Mexico

Then the girls had to do some more dancing after lunch.

We had a good time watching these little dancers too.
