When I was a child I relished the choosing of a costume for trick or treating and with some of them I would imagine a story of the circumstances surrounding the character I would decide to dress as. So it’s been fun for me as a Mama to think up costumes for my babies. It’s been pretty easy…until this year.

I had a really hard time feeling inspired or even very interested in coming up with ideas. But once that much needed inspiration struck I got pretty pumped. I decided to let the babies choose a character from some of our favorite books. I put them out on the table and let them decide which they liked best.

Then I set to work to attempt to pull off costumes of their chosen characters.

Halloween preparations and festivities began on the 30th. Finishing costumes and trying things on.

We got to work on our Jack O’ Lanterns with Daddy’s help.

Halloween day it was cold and…we got snow. Thankfully just flurries and no accumulation, but it was COLD. Maybe the coldest Halloween I’ve experienced up here. Thankfully most of our costumes were warmer or could easily be made warm.

Though BOO when you have to just put a coat on over it while your trick or treating!!

Our Jack O’ Grilled Cheese sandwiches didn’t turn out exactly as I’d expected, but the kids got the point.

I got out our collection of Halloween shirts we’ve received over the years so the kids could wear them to school or at home for the day. Josephine is the age Clara was for her 2nd Halloween when she wore this shirt! Oh they grow big so fast.

The afternoon we spent trying on costumes and feeling fancy dancy.

Sadly two of the kids were “sick.” Well, had run fevers the day before and a little that morning, so they were not allowed to go to school and did have to miss their Halloween parties there. But we told them if they got some rest and felt better they would be able to trick or treat. I’m happy they perked up though it looked doubtful for a while.

Finally it was time to dress and get out in the cold to hunt for candy! Here’s the cast of Hale-O-Ween 2017!

And now for the break down.

lilyjigi

First up we’ve got Violet and Sunny Baudelaire from A Series of Unfortunate Events of course. Lily fell in love with these books this Summer. We went with the Netflix series look for our characters..

LilyViolet

I was happy to find the perfect little Violet looking dress for her to wear. And we added her V.F.D. code “The World is Quiet Here.” necklace for some extra oompf.

Then we had Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. Lily received this  book from her godparents and gobbled it up. This character is perfect for Clara, our wild girl. Amazon has the animated version of this book available to stream and the kids enjoyed watching it this Summer.

Clara really did love her costume, don’t let the expression on her face confuse you.  That look is due to the unfortunate event of having to put tights on under her yellow costume leggings per Daddy’s instructions because of the cold weather.  She did not like that.

GercaspianNext is Prince Caspian from The Chronicles of Narnia. Gerhardt likes to curl up with this book and “read it.” He was so brave with a sword that ‘chinged,’ much the enjoyment of his mom and dad!

ephestNow for The Indian in the Cupboard and Dorothy of Oz who I just noticed is wearing her socks backwards. Still cute as ever though. We read The Indian in the Cupboard aloud last Spring and all the kids liked that book.

We haven’t read the Wizard of Oz or even seen the movie but I had the costume on hand since my neice had worn it about 16 years ago. Once again I have to say…they grow big so FAST!

Next is Beauty from the fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast, not Disney’s. It occurs to me now that Phil would have made a great Beast to accompany our Beauty. Oh well.

marthafancy

And last but NOT least is Fancy Nancy. Ooo la la! Is Martha not the picture of perfection? The most elegant and exquisite Fancy Nancy you’ve ever beheld? Très magnifique! I had so much fun with her costume.

It is a little sad to me that we don’t get treaters at our house. We are afterall living in a parking lot at a church, so I’m not surprised, but I do miss handing out sweets.

We don’t do Halloween in our house, but for the first maybe 7 years of living here I was prepared for trick-or-treaters. Then I gave up, realizing that living 5 miles out of town didn’t help. Plus you have to drive through the church parking lot to get to our very long driveway. Plus if you can even find our driveway in the very dark country night, you have to drive through the cemetery on Halloween and be greeted by our spooky black cats on our front porch. I’ve stopped buying candy.

  2. Wonderful costumes, Aubri!

After years of having no trick or treaters we had 25! We ran out of candy. Oh well.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Lea

Ooh La La!! I see Miss Mercy is ready to walk the runway in the group picture. She’s got her little hand on her hip – I see you, sweet thang!

  4. Aubri says:

Well, we aren’t as off the path as you are Jody! But still I doubt we’ll ever have any door knockers unless they’re the hard core kind of treaters.

I almost didn’t buy candy this year and really the kids got SO much I wish I hadn’t but I’m afraid that ONE year I don’t buy candy we’ll have one of those trick or treaters show up!
