Our St. Martin’s Day

Backing up again so I don’t forget!

November 11th was Veteran’s Day and on our church calendar we celebrate St. Martin’s Day. I look forward to this day every year. Mostly because it’s the one day I enjoy these delicious horseshoe cookies. I know, I’m so pious.

My mouth waters as they bake the day before, it’s so hard to wait until the 11th before I eat one. No one else will eat them, so once it’s St. Martin’s Day they’re all mine!

Our St. Martin’s Day breakfast of cookies none of them eat. They did actually try the cookies this year but decided they were disgusting so they just licked the sugar off the tops.

Hot chocolate with breakfast, perfect for a cold rainy morning.

And since it was so cold and rainy and because this was the first year we had no neighbors house to walk to for our lantern walk, we made these paper lanterns to hang.

Our Wednesday nights are much busier now with Midweek class at church for the 4 oldest and me going off to choir practice once everyone returns home. I did think about getting the flashlights and walking around the back yard and field Thursday evening just to keep the fun going, buuuut, that didn’t pan out either. I think I was tired.

I take the grossest food pictures, sorry. I just can’t make anything look appetizing through a camera. For supper we feasted on wild chicken, rice and French bread. Traditionally goose is served on St. Martin’s Day and while we do have 100s of geese flying over our house everyday honking away, I don’t have a gun…or a hunting license, so we had to be content with an easier bird. Does it look pink to you? Hmm, it was fully cooked, promise. So weird.

We discussed veterans with the babies and remembered the veterans in our family.

Lord God of hosts, Your servant Martin the soldier embodied the spirit of sacrifice. He became a bishop in Your Church to defend the catholic faith. Give us grace to follow his steps so that when our Lord returns we may be clothed with the baptismal garment of righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Treasury of Daily Prayer, page 903)

  1. Oh goodness, paper lanterns! Duh. I never would have thought of that! They look wonderful and I love that you have them hanging in your front window.

Blame the color of the chicken on the lighting… 🙂

    Enjoy those cookies,
    Lea
